This is an extra help, non-benefited, in-person position only. Applicants who are willing to accept assignment to any of the court locations will be considered. Payrate: $350 for half-day, $600 for full day.
Under general direction, accurately transcribes verbatim all required or requested court hearings. Produces official, verbatim transcripts of court proceedings in conformity with court standards; accurately reads back the record upon request; and performs related duties. This is a journey level classification in which incumbents are responsible for independently providing court reporting or voice writing services within assigned courtroom or other court proceedings. Work may involve real time transcription, traditional stenographic recording, or use of voice writing media.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Experience identified below must be within the last ten years. Education: In accordance with Section 8016 of the California Business and Professions Code, official court reporters or voice writers working in any court shall possess a current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) or Voice Writer license, or both, issued by the Court Reporters' Board of California. Desirable: Ability to report Realtime. Knowledge of: laws, regulation and practice relating to court reporting or voice writing and transcription; legal terminology, court operations and courtroom procedure; courtroom etiquette and conventions; court reporting or voice writing computer software and equipment. Skills in: reporting court proceedings at a rate of 200 words per minute. Ability to: simultaneously listen to and make verbatim record of court proceedings; pay attention to conversational detail; operate and maintain court reporting or voice writing computer equipment; work in presence of court audience. National Court Reporter Association real-time certification preferred.

This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified Per Diem Court Reporters. Placement on the list of qualified Per Diem Court Reporter List will be prioritized based in the order that a complete and thorough job application is received and processed, during this recruitment. All applications received will be evaluated based on the requirements of the position. A comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to a selection interview. Interviews will be held as the applications from qualified applicants are received. Working in any of the Ventura Superior Court facilities requires employees to be subject to security screening by security personnel who use a combination of walk-through and handheld screening devices.
