Remote telework is not available for this position. Working as a Sheriff's Office Detention Assistant Supporting law enforcement is an exciting and challenging opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment. As a Sheriff's Office Detention Assistant, you will provide support to facility staff, visitors, incarcerated persons, and other County personnel. You will also be responsible for performing clerical and store-keeping services related to: maintaining the commissary, clothing issuance, laundry, courier services, and other areas in the adult detention facilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering commissary items to incarcerated persons
  • Utilizing computer systems for tasks such as sending email communications and maintaining inventory
  • Writing and submitting incident reports
  • Placing, receiving, and closing out inventory orders
  • Laundering, folding, arranging, and storing facility issued clothing and bedding
  • Driving Sheriff's Office vehicles between facilities to transport supplies/equipment
  • Providing receiving and exchanging services related to: incarcerated persons' personal bulk property and clothing, facility issued clothing, and court appearance clothing
  • Releasing personal property to designated persons
  • Communicating with vendors, the public, and staff
  • Leading and supervising work crews of incarcerated persons for some assignments

Please note that Sheriff's Office Detention Assistants wear uniforms and work assignments that may include day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Although Sheriff's Office Detention Assistants do not perform the full range of incarcerated person supervision responsibilities that are assigned to Correctional Deputies, they are non-sworn staff who provide a variety of support services to the staff and incarcerated persons in the adult detention facilities.

As the ideal candidate for this position, you are a forward-thinking, self-starter who possesses many of the following:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: storekeeping, warehousing, retail sales, ordering/receiving, inventory, distribution, laundry operations
  • Supervisory or lead worker experience
  • Some experience working in detention or institutional environments is highly desirable, but not required
  • Basic computer and writing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Word programs
  • Problem solving skills and adaptability as needs change
  • The ability to build positive work relationships and communicate effectively
  • Patience, positivity, and empathy
  • A mindset geared toward safety and security
