About the Role
The VP of Construction owns the delivery of projects from late-stage development through commissioning and handoff to Operations / Asset Management. You lead the team responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction through third-party vendors and partners. You are accountable for delivering projects safely, on time, on budget, and at the quality required for long-term asset performance. This role requires someone who can operate at both the strategic and detailed level. You must be able to build the execution plan, pressure-test budgets, negotiate contracts, drive value engineering, solve problems quickly, and ensure external partners perform. This is not a passive coordination role. You are the internal owner of execution and integrate well with the other functional teams in the company.
Responsibilities
Project Delivery Ownership
- Own project execution from late-stage development through commissioning and transition to Operations / Asset Management
- Build and drive the execution plan for each project, including schedule, budget, key risks, and critical path items
- Ensure projects are delivered with urgency and discipline, without compromising safety, quality, or long-term asset performance
- Create clear reporting on progress, budget, vendor performance, and decision points for leadership
- Foster a culture of safety both for the company and our projects, developing systems and processes to achieve zero incidents
Engineering, Procurement, and Construction
- Select, vet and manage third-party engineering firms, equipment vendors, contractors, and EPC partners
- Ensure engineering is complete, high quality, constructible, and aligned with operational requirements, project economics, and schedule
- Oversee procurement strategy, vendor selection, scope clarity, and lead-time management. Keep up to date on technical advances in our industry.
- Hold construction partners accountable for execution, quality, safety, schedule, and commercial discipline
Cost, Contracts, and Value Engineering
- Develop and refine cost estimates for development-stage projects so we can make better investment, pricing, and prioritization decisions before execution begins
- Lead the negotiation and closing of contracts with third parties, including engineering, procurement, construction, and key equipment supply agreements
- Drive value engineering to reduce project cost, improve constructibility, and increase the competitiveness of sites without compromising long-term performance
- Own budget control, forecasting, change order management, and cost-to-complete visibility across the execution portfolio
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner closely with Development to ensure projects entering execution are sufficiently mature, clearly scoped, and set up for successful delivery
- Work with Finance, Legal, and Technical teams to resolve issues quickly and keep projects moving
- Ensure projects reach commissioning with the right documentation, testing, and performance readiness in place
- Build a disciplined hand off process so Operations / Asset Management receives assets
Success Metrics
- Safety and execution with zero incidents is a top priority for the company and the number one metric of success.
- Projects delivered on or ahead of schedule
- Projects delivered at or below approved budget
- Accurate cost estimates that improve development-stage decision making
- Better contract terms, stronger vendor accountability, and reduced commercial risk
- Successful value engineering that lowers cost and improves site economics
- Clean commissioning and hand off to Operations / Asset Management
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience delivering complex infrastructure, energy, industrial, transportation, or similar capital projects. Degree in engineering (electrical, civil, mechanical, etc.) a plus.
- Strong experience managing third-party engineering, procurement, and construction partners
- Demonstrable track record of taking projects from pre-construction or late-stage development through commissioning
- Deep experience in project budgeting, forecasting, scheduling, and commercial management. Familiarity with key project management and industry software.
- Proven ability to estimate project costs early, negotiate and close third-party contracts, and lead value engineering efforts
- Strong technical and commercial judgment, with the ability to balance speed, cost, quality, and long-term asset performance
- Excellent leadership, organization, and communication skills
