Definition: To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of City streets, parks and related facilities. Supervision received and exercised: Receives general supervision from supervisory and management staff. May exercise technical supervision over less experienced staff within assigned work unit.
Distinguishing characteristics: This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents initially perform the more routine duties assigned to positions in this series and work under close supervision. However, as experience is gained, incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence. This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker level in that the latter performs the most complex duties and has lead supervisory responsibility.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Knowledge of: Methods, techniques and procedures related to parks and street maintenance. Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and equipment operations. Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment. Hazardous material and proper safety requirements. Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment. Safe work practices.
Ability to: Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities. Perform heavy manual labor. Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner. Work effectively in the absence of close supervision. Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Walking, standing, bending, crouching, or climbing for extended periods of time Operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations Communicating with others Reading and writing Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Education and experience which includes 6 months of construction and maintenance experience or its equivalent. Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. License or Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
Working Conditions: Environmental Conditions: Outside environment; exposure to noise, grease, fumes and heavy equipment; may work at heights; work in inclement weather conditions; exposure to hazardous material. Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, bending, climbing or crouching for prolonged periods of time; and moderate to heavy lifting.

As a result of the selection process an eligibility list of qualified candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies as long as the eligibility list remains active. Candidates who score the highest in the selection process will be required to pass a reference and background exam prior to receiving a conditional job offer. Candidates receiving a conditional offer of employment will be required to pass a pre-employment medical and drug screen examination prior to receiving a final job offer.
