Position Summary
Under the guidance of the Operations Manager, the Safety Support Specialist maintains a safe and supportive environment across Catholic Charities of Northwest California (CCNWC) facilities and programs. This full-time siteposition focuses on the physical safety and creation of a calm and respectful environment using kindness, clear communication, and awareness of how past experiences may affect behavior. The Safety Support Specialist is part of a dedicated team that responds to emergencies, enforces program guidelines, assists with minor janitorial and facility upkeep, and contributes to maintaining a positive atmosphere.
Essential Functions
1. Maintain a safe space for clients, staff, and visitors by consistently being friendly, welcoming, and respectful.
2. Respond to emergencies with care, using calm and respectful communication to deescalate a crisis situation in a way that supports dignity, self-control, and safety.
3. Approach all interactions with patience and understanding, recognizing that client behaviors may be expressions of past trauma, stress, or unmet needs.
4. Walk through the facility regularly to prevent problems by identifying and addressing safety issues and risks. Encouraging clients to promote safety and community well-being.
5. Help with conversations after incidents to rebuild trust, encourage accountability, and relationship repair between clients, staff, and peers when it is appropriate to do so.
6. Set clear and healthy boundaries through kindness to all and professionalism. Maintaining consistent and respectful boundaries that protect safety and trust.
7. Help people stay calm using grounding and redirection techniques to support people who are upset.
8. Work as a team with program staff, case managers, and supervisors to keep safety plans consistent to support client goals and continuity of care.
9. Support facility upkeep, including cleanliness and order, to promote a calm and organized environment that reduces stress and promotes dignity.
10. Ensure Safe Facility Access: Monitor and manage entry and exit points to ensure that only authorized individuals access the premises. Guide non-eligible individuals off-site with compassion and respect.
11. Monitor and manage access to the building to ensure that only authorized people enter the building and guide others off-site respectfully.
12. Participate in safety planning and emergency preparedness through safety drills, and inspections. give feedback to improve emergency plans and client safety.
13. Communicate clearly and respectfully with first respondersCoordinate with emergency personnel (EMS, fire, law enforcement) in ways that protect client confidentiality, de-escalate tension, and preserve client dignity.
14. Complete incident reports promptly and objectively, using language that avoids blame and reflects respect for all individuals involved.
15. Take part in training on safety, trauma-informed care, mental health first aid, nonviolent crisis intervention, and cultural identity.
16. Communicate well on the handheld radio system. View and review security cameras as assigned.
17. Support the Mission, Vision, and Values of Catholic Charities in the performance of all essential job functions and responsibilities.
18. Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations to the workplace or work processes.
Other Responsibilities
1. Work with the Diocese of Santa Rosa and local parishes as appropriate and requested.
2. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required
- High school diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE). 1 year of experience in security services preferred.
- Currently trained in Trauma Informed Care and De-escalation or is willing and able to complete within 3 months of hire
- Strong written and verbal communication; organization, conflict resolution and problem- solving skills.
- Able to stay calm under pressure and respond effectively in crisis situations
- Currently possess or are willing and able to complete certifications in CPR/First Aid, within 3 months of hire
- Maintain positive relationships with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Law Enforcement (LE).
- Participate in Agency-authorized skills and techniques in the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training sponsored by the Crisis Prevention Institute
- Ability to maintain boundaries while showing care and professionalism
- Excellent interpersonal skills, cooperative, friendly, proactive, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers. Ability to work closely with clients and other employees to ensure a positive and constructive environment.
- Ability to prioritize and plan work activities to use time efficiently. Good organization skills, ability to produce accurate and thorough work and to monitor work for quality.
- Ability to work under pressure with a positive, solution-oriented approach. Ability to make appropriate decisions based on training and experience when faced with multiple options.
- Dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction and to use feedback to improve performance
- Computer literacy required including experience with Microsoft 365 Suite.
- Passion and enthusiasm for the mission of Catholic Charities and its clients.
- Valid driver license and at least state required minimum of automobile insurance, clear DMV driving record and ability to provide own transportation. Must be willing and able to travel between agency sites.
- Must pass DOJ background clearance (fingerprinting) in accordance with the Diocese of Santa Rosa's policies prior to starting employment.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
