Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) in DES, SC, the incumbent performs a wide variety of professional engineering work in a field setting and an office setting. The work includes highway construction projects involving bridges, buildings, walls, barriers, drainage structures, sign structures, and appurtenances. The field engineer ensures contractors build structures in compliance with contract documents (Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, contract plans and Special Provisions). The incumbent may act as an Assistant Structure Representative or Assistant Resident Engineer/Resident Engineer on construction projects.

Structure representation is required on projects where the work is predominantly structural, e.g., bridges, tall walls, streets and highways (Code Section 137.6). Possession of a valid California professional engineer license is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional engineering work in the field and office settings on highway construction projects.
  • Ensure contractors comply with contract documents and applicable standards.
  • Act as an Assistant Structure Representative or Resident Engineer on construction projects.
  • Collaborate with Senior Bridge Engineer and other engineering staff.
  • Assist in evaluating design and construction proposals.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in the Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program and loan assignments as required.
  • Maintain professional knowledge of current engineering practices and standards.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; 24 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Valid California professional engineer license (PE) preferred; required for Level D assignments.
  • Knowledge of state and federal bridge design codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in engineering software and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid Driver's License for travel to field locations.

Compensation

Salary Range:

  • B $7,428.00 to $9,296.00
  • C $8,896.00 to $11,131.00
  • D $9,712.00 to $12,152.00


Eligibility and Application Instructions

Applicants have 24 continuous months (or 33 months) to complete the mandatory rotation program once hired. The applicant may also be required to go on loan to another project delivery unit for temporary or peak staffing needs.
