Supervising Public Health Nurse

The Department of Health Services is seeking an experienced Supervising Public Health Nurse to lead public health nursing services in the Disease Control Unit. Starting salary up to $85.19/hour ($177,801/year) and a competitive total compensation package!

About the Position

The Supervising Public Health Nurse (PHN) works in partnership with the Director of Public Health Nursing and Public Health Division leadership to oversee the clinical nursing and community health functions of the Disease Control team. In this role, you will directly or indirectly supervise the Disease Control team comprising of Public Health Nurses, Public Health Investigators, Community Health Worker Specialists and clerical staff. Core responsibilities of this position include:

  • Supervising disease reporting, investigation, and follow-up in alignment with Titles 15 and 17 of the California Code of Regulations
  • Providing clinical leadership and staff development using PHN core competencies and supervisory principles
  • Assisting in recruitment, training, supervision, evaluation, and performance management of nursing and field staff
  • Coordinating with State partners, Emergency Preparedness, and local organizations on outbreak response, immunization campaigns, and emerging public health threats
  • Supporting program planning, contract/grant compliance, and budgetary oversight
  • Exercising independent decision-making in daily operations, staff supervision, and clinical judgment
  • Consulting with subject matter experts and collaborating with leadership and interdisciplinary teams on complex, unusual, or high-impact cases
  • Leading, coaching, and contributing as a team member in a shared leadership model

As the ideal candidate for this position, you will be a proactive and collaborative leader with a strong foundation in public health nursing and experience working in disease control. In addition, you will possess many of the following:

  • A minimum of two years of recent supervisory or lead public health nursing experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in population health, communicable disease, and outbreak investigation
  • Proven experience in performance management, coaching, and mentoring public health staff
  • Familiarity with Title 17 reporting mandates and local health jurisdiction protocols
  • Skill in navigating ambiguity and leading in dynamic, evolving environments
  • Strong public speaking, written communication, and data reporting capabilities
  • Cultural humility and experience working with diverse and underserved populations
  • Demonstrated follow-through, critical thinking, attention to detail, and initiative
  • Experience collaborating across systems and effective stakeholder engagement (state, community-based organizations, and other county departments)

Interview and Referral Process

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a Supervising Public Health Nurse position in the Department of Health Services.
