Designer & Hobby Hacker

  2025-07-01     Whissle     Santa Rosa,CA
Description:

About Whissle

At Whissle, we conduct research and innovation in real-time signal processing and build practical applications that translate human-like voice and non-vocal cues to action.

Our voice AI models, agents, and APIs power affordable, intelligent, and scalable agent-driven workflows — from cars to smart homes to enterprise automation.

We believe good design isn't just about pixels — it's about intuitive, clever, and human-centered experiences across both physical and digital environments.

About This Role

We're hiring a Designer & Hobby Hacker — a curious, hands-on problem solver who loves designing, prototyping, and tinkering with both UI/UX and physical interfaces. You'll work alongside engineers, AI researchers, and founders to shape interfaces, demo projects, and creative experiments.

Expect to contribute to:

  • Design and prototype interfaces for our AI voice assistants, web apps, and physical products
  • Build interactive demos and experimental projects (web, hardware, browser extensions, infotainment systems)
  • Conduct quick, lean user research and usability tests
  • Hack together interactive prototypes using microcontrollers, sensors, and rapid prototyping tools
  • Contribute to project documentation, visual storytelling, and concept pitches
  • Build and iterate simple web apps and frontends (Next.js, React.js) for product demos and internal tools

Example Projects You'll Touch

  • PetAI: Voice-reactive pet assistant
  • Deep-Playlist: AI DJ and music recommender
  • Coworking Voice Assistant: Automating space management with speech
  • Deep-Drive: In-car Meta-ASR powered infotainment demos, monitoring and controls
  • Language Tutor: Real-time voice-powered language coaching
  • Plus new experimental builds we haven't thought up yet 🚀

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Graphic Design, UI/UX Design, and Visual Communication
  • Experience with Rapid Prototyping tools, Figma, CAD
  • Familiarity with electronics, microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32), and basic coding
  • Basic working knowledge of Next.js, React.js, and modern frontend development
  • Comfortable conducting user research and usability testing
  • Collaborative, fast-moving, and adaptable within a hybrid work setup
  • Clear communicator, both verbal and written
  • Bachelor's in Design, Engineering, HCI, or a related field
  • (Bonus) Experience working on AI, IoT, or voice-first product experiences

Why Join Us?

  • Build frontier AI applications shaping how people talk to and coexist with intelligent machines
  • Collaborate with a passionate, multi-disciplinary team of engineers, AI researchers, and designers.
  • Flexible hybrid work setup in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Freedom to invent, tinker, prototype, and help shape product direction
  • Work on real product ideas, not just wrappers.
