Description:

San Diego or SF Bay Area preferred. The role is hybrid or remote, dependent on location.

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to join our team as our founding data expert. This role will own the pipelines, platforms, and processes that power our data-driven culture. You'll be responsible for designing and maintaining clean, reliable, scalable, and modular data infrastructure that enables analytics, AI innovation, and business strategy. You'll work closely with stakeholders across the company – from product to operations to AI/ML – to ensure data is trustworthy, accessible, and aligned with our long-term goals.

This role will set the technical foundation for our data strategy and shape the architecture, technology stack, and engineering culture from the ground up. If you're an experienced engineer with a strong background in data systems and a passion for creating impactful solutions, we'd love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain robust, scalable data pipelines and ETL processes to support analytics, reporting, and machine learning use cases.
  • Own and optimize our data architecture—storage, warehousing, and modeling—for performance, flexibility, and cost-efficiency.
  • Develop seamless, robust data transformation modules to make data available in multiple format standards such as OMOP and FHIR.
  • Integrate into multiple endpoints (EMR systems, cloud storage, databases, BI tools) in order to widen the reach of data and insights.
  • Develop data cleaning and validation routines to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with business teams to define metrics, design dashboards, and support decision-making with reliable data.
  • Partner with AI/ML engineers to provide clean, labeled, and accessible datasets for experimentation and deployment.
  • Establish best practices for data governance, documentation, and observability.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve data processes and systems in alignment with the company's strategic roadmap.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, preferably in a startup or high-growth environment.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with modern data stack tools (e.g., dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift).
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting and data processing.
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data from various sources (e.g., APIs, EMRs, third-party vendors).
  • A strong understanding of data modeling, warehousing, and performance optimization.
  • Strong experience with analytics tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau, Mode) and enabling self-serve BI across teams.
  • Experience supporting AI/ML pipelines with clean, labeled, and version-controlled data.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills—comfortable translating business needs into data solutions.
  • Passion for healthcare and a desire to use data to improve outcomes for patients and clinicians.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or skills in backend software engineering, including server architecture, API development, system monitoring, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure management.
  • Experience with healthcare data (e.g., EHR/EMR, HL7, FHIR, claims data) and relevant regulations (HIPAA, SOC 2).
  • Experience with patient data standards such as FHIR and OMOP.
  • Familiarity with data privacy and ethical data use in healthcare and AI contexts.
  • Previous work in early-stage or scaling health tech startups.
