VACANCY INFORMATION

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to fill a Public Information Associate position. Positions in this class assist in the administration of public information programs and services, utilizing various media channels to engage the public and promote departmental activities. Responsibilities include writing and editing press releases, coordinating media relations, researching programs for media opportunities, and applying communication best practices across traditional and digital platforms.

POSITION DETAILS

This Public Information Associate position is located within the Administrative Services Division at 1816 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015. The role may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays to support public information activities and respond to media or public inquiries.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing digital media content for web and social media platforms.
  • Maintaining contact lists for various media outlets, including hyperlocal and ethnic media.
  • Coordinating and assisting with public information-related projects, research, events, and programs related to community and department concerns.
  • Researching emerging media for community outreach and public communications.
  • Establishing and maintaining interactions with media, community groups, and department managers to proactively provide information.
  • Responding to public inquiries regarding services, and preparing correspondence for general complaints and recommendations.
  • Handling media requests under the California Public Records Act in coordination with management and legal counsel.
  • Analyzing data to develop communication recommendations.
  • Maintaining internal communication projects and departmental website content.
  • Managing a photo archive and staffing public information booths, including making presentations to community groups.
  • Assisting with emergency and crisis communications and driving to various sites as needed.

Restricted to permanent County of Los Angeles employees who have completed their initial probationary period and currently hold a payroll title of Public Information Associate or an equivalent class performing similar work at an equivalent salary and complexity, in accordance with Civil Service Rule 15.
