Job Title: Program Aide

Department: Youth

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Reports to: [Insert Supervisor's Name]

Job Summary:

Leads children's activities at an after school program, including classroom training, tutoring, sports activities, bible study, computer programs and specialized programs; prepares and serves children lunch and snacks; assists in leading field trips; maintains the cleanliness of the after school area; transports passengers in a Salvation Army vehicle.

Essential Functions:

This job description identifies the essential functions and requirements of this position. The incumbent may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this job description.

Child Care Responsibilities (40%):

  1. Provides constant care for the needs of the children in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure and healthy manner.
  2. Prepares and serves children snacks and meals; ensures that children receive nutritional and tasteful food; provides positive, relaxed atmosphere during children's mealtime encouraging conversation.
  3. Exhibits control of the children and, when needed, displays proper discipline techniques.
  4. Prepares and maintains up-to-date records and required reports (attendance, development progress, discipline reports, etc.).
  5. Ensures the accountability, security and safety of children participating in after school activities and field trips; reports all accidents to the supervisor in an accurate and timely manner.
  6. Administers basic first aid as necessary; reports any health issues with supervisor in accordance to policies and procedures.

Organizing, Planning, and Teaching Lessons (30%):

  1. Develops and implements lesson plans which are age-group program specific; utilizes age-group appropriate discovery areas, enriched with program-specific activities, including teacher-made materials and hands-on activities.
  2. Determines appropriate supplies and materials for lesson plans and recreational activities; ensures the children's safety in utilizing the same.
  3. Provides opportunities for physical and mental stimulation through both inside and outside learning activities.
  4. Maintains the after-school materials in an orderly fashion; maintains accountability for any supplies necessary for after school programs.

Driving Responsibilities (20%):

  1. Transports or assists with transporting children whenever needed; ensures the safety and protection of children at all times.
  2. Assists in leading children on field trips.

Cleaning Responsibilities (10%):

  1. Cleans the kitchen, classrooms, table, vehicles, floors, etc. in accordance with established sanitary standards.

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Attends and participates in regularly scheduled in-service training sessions.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of Child Behavior and Development.
  2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of First Aid and C.P.R and ability to ensure the safety of children.
  3. Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.
  4. Ability to teach children Christian values as well as general childhood education curriculum.
  5. Ability to plan, develop and implement effective childhood programs and activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or G.E.D. required,
  2. One to two years' experience teaching child development programs, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  3. Ability to pass all state licensing background checks.

Certifications:

  1. Valid State Drivers License
  2. Valid CDL – Class B (Preferred)
  3. CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain)

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  2. Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively.
  3. Ability to observe children and ensure their safety.
  4. Ability to drive a Salvation Army vehicle safely observing all laws, regulations, and policies.
  5. Ability to pass DOT requirements to drive a Salvation Army midbus or other DOT vehicle if requested.
  6. Duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing and walking on a frequent change basis.
  7. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) frequently.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.
